However, as is the case regarding most Mac programmes, Mac Family Tree is on the expensive side. At $49.00 it costs almost double that of many of its competitors. Luckily, they do offer a free demo which allows you to check out Mac Family Tree before committing to a purchase. Perfect Tree can be installed on Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Commonly, this application's installer has the following filename: Perfect-Tree-demo-v1.zip.

On November 12, 2020, Apple released the macOS Big Sur upgrade (version 11.0.1). We've outlined below the different editions of Family Tree Maker and their compatibility status:

  • FTM 2019 (24.0.1) - Compatible with issues
    Export to FTM 2017 and FTM 3.1 formats doesn't work, and only trees in FTM Mac 24.0.1 format can be opened. Issues will be fixed in the upcoming free update (version 24.1).
  • FTM 2017 (23.3) - Compatible with issues
    Export to FTM 3.1 format doesn't work, and only trees in FTM Mac 23.3 format can be opened. Evaluation is currently underway for a possible patch.
  • FTM Mac 3.1 - Compatible with Issues
    Export doesn't work, and only trees in FTM Mac 3.1 format can be opened. No patches are planned.
  • FTM Mac 1, 2 and 3 (Ancestry Editions) - Not Compatible

[column width=”740px” padding=”5px”]Family Tree Maker 3 (Family Tree Maker for Mac 3 at its launch) is Ancestry.com’s sequel to Family Tree Maker for Mac 2, with a slight name change. Family Tree Maker is a popular cross-platform app (both OS X and Windows) that supports syncing your genealogy data with Ancestry.com and Ancestry.com’s mobile apps. Files created by FTM3 are compatible with Family Tree Maker 2014 (Windows), and in general, it’s closer to the Windows version than previous releases. Among the new features, are a new family view, hint syncing between platforms, export of family tree branches to new FTM files as well as GEDCOM files, and interface improvements. FTM 3 does support OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
